Grace Jones is the closest thing this world has to a living goddess. She resides at the junction of strength and beauty, and the intersection where the masculine meets the feminine. Between her Nightclubbing album and portraying Zula in Conan and Katrina in Vamp, Grace Jones was my childhood hero. Her androgyny drew me in. While there, I was made endlessly curious about sexuality, and the presentation of otherness, particularly as it pertains to blackness. Throughout my teens and adulthood, her authenticity and boldness had an immense effect on how I learned to navigate my posture while defining my identity. Constantly inspired by her music and larger than life personality, my portraits of Ms. Jones attempt to capture her essence while maintaining a formal nod to her iconic imagery.
